Wallace Speaks to Faculty, Students at Westminster School, Visits CT Children’s Hospital

On Tuesday, January 24th Stephen conducted two separate presentations at the Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, one for the faculty (Teens Today Program) and one for the students (School Speaker Program). Stephen addressed a number of topics, such as youth mentoring, risk taking, underage drinking, other drug use, bullying, suicide, and early, intimate sexual behavior among teens. Later in the day, Stephen visited the pediatric pain clinic at Connecticut Children’t Hospital.

Wallace Publishes New Feature Article in Camping Magazine

Stephen’s new feature article in the January/February edition of Camping Magazine, Unpacking Summer, addresses the difficulty many young people face at times of transition, in this case the end of summer camp. It includes input and advice from Cape Cod Sea Camps campers and their parents and offers some strategies that apply to most any transition. It also outlines common social-emotional reactions to loss and helps us to better understand a normal grieving process and how to help kids cope in such circumstances. This will also be the topic of Stephen’s upcoming presentation at the American Camp Association’s annual conference in Atlanta, GA.

And new data from a 2011 teen driving study by Liberty Mutual Insurance and SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) reveals an interesting yet cautionary anomaly: teens believe New Year’s Eve is the most dangerous time of year to drive, yet it also is the holiday or event when teens most frequently drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

Frequent Camping Magazine contributor and national conference educational speaker Stephen Wallace will serve as the director of the new Center for Adolescent Research and Education (CARE) at Susquehanna University. The announcement was made at a gala honoring Wallace and the thirtieth anniversary of his organization, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
